A celebration of unity, love, peace and joy

On the 7th of July, 2018, about 2000 Malaysians of all races and religion, in the spirit of unity, gather at Ponderosa Golf and Country Club for the Walk for Unity.

Charity WalkThis charity event, organized by the Malacca Johore Diocese Evangelical Commission, in collaboration with Ponderosa Golf and Country Club, is a fund-raising effort for 3 beneficiaries, namely Hope Garden Autism Home, Graceville Old Folks Home and Berkat Children’s Home.

Participants gathered as early as 6.00am at Ponderosa Golf and Country Club before the event is expected to start at 7.30am. As more people arrive, the calm and quite morning are filled with the hustle and bustle of eager participants to begin the fun-walk.

Charity WalkAs the emcee introduces the honoured guests, which include YB Andrew Chen Kah Eng, the ADUN of Stulang, and YB Liow Cai Tung, the ADUN of Johor Jaya, His Lordship Rt. Rev. Bernard Paul, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Malacca Johore, begins the charity event with an opening prayer.

“It’s a walk of love,” says Bishop Bernard in his welcoming speech, “love not only for ourselves, but also for those less fortunate. Harmony comes when you care for others.” His Lordship also thanked the co-organisers for coordinating the event and also the participants. He end his speech with a reminder to not only care for one another, but to walk together as the new Malaysia.

YB Andrew Chen then took the centre stage, “We, as policy makers, will make sure that all policies will benefit for all races,” he said in his speech.

“In this new Malaysia, let us walk together. We promote people engagement, people participation, we participate more in all these social activities, so that we can work together to build a better nation,” he adds.

The participants then proceed to the starting line of the walk, near the entrance of Ponderosa Golf and Country Club. With the sound of the air-horn by Bishop Bernard Paul, the walk begins.

The 4 kilometer path of the walk goes through Taman Ponderosa along the streets of Jalan Ponderosa Utama, Persiaran Bumi Hijau and back. The walk ends when all the participants return to the Country Club at around 9.30am.

Charity DinnerBut the festivities doesn’t end there. The participants are treated with performances on stage, which include singing by children, Zumba and even a sharing on family by Rev. Moses Yap, the head of the Diocesan Evangelical Commission. Visitors can also visit the carnival sales, with food stalls, game stalls and corporate stalls from various companies such as UOB Bank, Standard Chartered, and Very Good Cereals, among others.

The “Walk of Unity” ends at around noon but the event continues on in the evening, with the Love, Peace, Joy Charity Dinner which was held at Ponderosa Golf and Country Club Trading Post hall.

Charity Dinner“We need a lot of organisation to help us in the journey to rebuild the country,” said YB Liow in her opening speech. “I hope that in the future we have more programs and policies for the country and really appreciate everyone. Let us reborn and rebuild the country together.”

The dinner guests are treated with various performances which include a very passionate singing by teenagers from Hope Garden Autism Home, receiving a massive applause from the audience. His Lordship, Bishop Bernard Paul too did not miss the opportunity to take the stage and sing a song. There were also lucky draws for various prizes with the grand prize of a 32-inch LED TV.

Charity DinnerThe highlight of the evening’s event is the presentation of cheques by Bishop Bernard Paul for the 3 beneficiaries, accepted by representatives from each organisation. The raised fund, which amounts to RM100,000.00, is a result of generous contributions from the participants of the Charity Walk and Dinner, through the effort of the Malacca Johor Diocese Evangelical Commission’s Evangelical Concert Ministry, chaired by Christine Honey Lee, and also Ponderosa Golf and Country Club.

In his closing speech, Bishop Bernard Paul, thanked the organisers, the volunteers and the participants who contributed to the fund-raiser and making the day’s event a success.
