Disaster Relief Appeal

20 November 2020

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,

Since early this year many people and communities have been hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic here at home in Malaysia and globally. We must all intensify our efforts to reach out and help those who are suffering around us.

However, in addition to the pandemic, since October 2020, a series of tropical cyclones has affected large areas in the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, causing massive flooding, damage to homes, public infrastructure, agriculture, loss of livestock and much suffering. You
may have seen the images on the various media platforms.

More than 32 million people have been affected in these areas and nearly 3 million people in urgent need of assistance. Some of these countries and Churches have put out a global appeal for help. They need shelter, food, protection, healthcare, and support to rebuild their lives.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Malaysia (CBCM) has decided to respond to their needs by appealing to all Catholics to contribute to the disaster relief fund. The contributions from all dioceses will be pooled and sent to those affected through the respective Church and Caritas offices in these countries. This appeal will close on 30 November 2020.

You can send in your contributions to your respective diocese offices or diocese bank account. All donors are to indicate “Disaster Relief Fund” on the back of their cheque, or in the comments section for online donations.
